All the area around Chilko Lake has been protected by the creation of Tsylos Provincial Wilderness Park. The lake and park can be explored and enjoyed by boat, on foot, or on horseback. A network of trails leads to many fine view points, secluded coves, spectacular cliffs and vast alpine meadows.
Bighorn sheep and mountain goats are at home in the higher parts and black and grizzly bears can be seen along the lake and river during sockeye salmon run. Every year starting in mid-August, hundreds of thousands of red sockeye salmon return to their spawning grounds at the north end of Chilko Lake. This grand spectacle is one of the largest salmon runs and last until mid-October. It ends in the age-old cycle of death and birth.
